It runs in both directions, and both directions cost money.
Aquaculture research in India is not short of quality. What it is short of is delivery. A finding that would lift survival by fifteen points gets published, cited by other researchers, and never reaches the farmer who needed it — because nobody translated it into a dose, a schedule, or a piece of equipment he can buy.
The gap runs the other way too. Farmers know things that never get measured. The problems that actually kill a cycle — transport stress, a moult that fails at three in the morning, a mineral that settles to the tank floor — rarely make it onto a research agenda because the people writing the agenda are not on the floor at three in the morning.
Noxmara exists in that gap. We run a working farm and a research programme in the same place, on the same animals. Every product we sell was standardised on our own stock before anyone else was asked to pay for it, and every question we take up came off our own floor.
We call it aggressive science because the timescale matters. A farmer needs a better result this cycle, not in the next funding round.
Eleven people, one chain. Everybody owns a link and nobody owns anybody.
A mud crab sector does not exist until every link works — seed, water, feed, moult, harvest, market. Most companies pick one link and outsource the rest. We took the whole chain and put a person on each part of it, with a farm underneath them to test on.
So this list is not a ladder. It is a map of who is standardising what, and the work only holds together because every part of it is being carried by somebody who knows it better than the rest of us do.
Over a decade on one animal. A PhD in aquaculture specialising in Scylla serrata recirculating culture, research visits to NOFIMA in Norway and Vietnam National University of Agriculture, and guest faculty in the Department of Aquaculture at KUFOS, Kochi.

Standardising floc-based culture for mud crab. Biofloc is well worked out for shrimp and close to guesswork for crab — different animal, different feeding behaviour, different tolerance.

A formulation has to hold together in water long enough for a slow feeder, survive manufacture at scale, and still cost what a farmer can pay. Failing any one makes the other two irrelevant.

Fisheries students come through here as interns, and they are key players while they are with us.
Noxmara takes fisheries students as interns into the Research and Development department — not to file papers and watch, but onto live experiments, with animals, tanks and data they are trusted to handle.
Part of the reason is practical. The NXM-EXP programme needs hands, and it needs people who have not yet learned which questions they are supposed to stop asking.
Most of the reason is not practical at all. We came through the same course and into the same job market, and we know how few places will let a student anywhere near real work before there is a degree in their hand. Lifting the people coming up behind us is not a side activity here. It is a large part of what makes this company feel alive rather than merely operational.
And it works. Give a student mentored freedom — a real problem, somebody to check their thinking, and the room to run at it — and the energy that comes back does wonders. We have seen it often enough now to build around it instead of hoping for it.
So we look for inspiring students: the ones who are made for this industry and will go on to give back to it. An internship here is meant to enrich the industry, not only the intern and not only us.
